Two men will become one at a South Carolina rally Friday. One of them is examining the feasibility of a presidential bid. The other has dismantled his campaign, despite still being on the ballot. Together, they want to convince voters that Stephen Colbert and Herman Cain are one and the same.
<h2>'The Rock Me Like a Herman Cain' rally</h2>
Colbert, a South Carolina native and the host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," has said he would like to explore the possibility of a bid for the Republican presidential nomination. However, he was too late to get on the ballot in South Carolina. Friday at 1 p.m. -- one day before the primary begins -- Colbert will stage the "The Rock Me Like a Herman Cain" rally at the College of Charleston. At the rally, he and Cain himself will be urging voters that a vote for Cain is a clear sign that there is a “hunger for a Stephen Colbert campaign.”

Colbert said:
<blockquote>“How much more of an outsider can you be? He’s not even running.”</blockquote>
<h3>'Hunger' for Colbert?</h3>
A Marist poll on Thursday showed there is some "hunger" for a Colbert campaign in South Carolina. About 18 percent of potential Republican primary voters said they were somewhat likely to vote for Colbert. More than half also said there was no possibility they would vote for him.
<h3>Cain in on the joke</h3>
Herman Cain, however, seems to be laughing along. He told Fox News:
<blockquote>“On Stephen Colbert’s endorsement of himself as Herman Cain, I find it very clever and humorous, as it should be. Anyone who finds what Mr. Colbert is doing offensive, should simply lighten up. ... To be perfectly clear, I will not be assuming Stephen Colbert’s identity. We are very different when it comes to the color of our – hair.”</blockquote>
<h3>(Fund) Raising Cain</h3>
The poll, and several South Carolina television ads, were sponsored by the Super PAC Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow group. One of the TV spots urges viewers to vote for Cain but shows the image of Colbert instead.
<h3>Campaign financing spotlighted</h3>
Colbert started his Super PAC in June and handed the reins over to fellow Comedy Central host John Stewart last week. Both Colbert's show and Stewart's "The Daily Show" have gotten considerable mileage out of the Super PAC, using it as a springboard to parody and bring attention to new campaign financing laws. The comedians are suggesting that the new laws allow Super PACs to raise unlimited funds and disperse them with very little disclosure.

Mark Tompkins, an associate political science professor at the University of South Carolina, said:
<blockquote>“On the one hand he’s just having a good time, but on the other he’s engaged in pretty serious satire of the state of campaign finance. It’s more than just fun.”</blockquote>

Millions of Americans suffer from type 2 diabetes, and Paula Deen, the Food Network TV chef, was recently added to the list. As celebrity chefs like Anthony Bourdain have argued, Deen's continued endorsement of heavy foods – as evidenced by a recent contribution she made to Opraph Winfrey's O: The Oprah Magazine – is irresponsible.
<h2>Understanding type 2 diabetes</h2>
Type 2 <a href="http://www.newsytype.com/6207-gene-obesity-diabetes/">diabetes</a> is the most common form of diabetes. Either the body fails to produce enough insulin or the cells of the body begin to ignore the insulin that is present. Insulin is necessary for the human body to properly utilize glucose for energy. It helps transport the sugar from the blood and into the cells. If blood sugar is not regulated by insulin in this way, a variety of complications can occur.
<h3>Paula Deen's diabetes uproar</h3>
Tuesday, Paula Deen admitted publicly that she had been diagnosed in 2008 with type 2 diabetes. She has partnered with drugmaker Novo Nordisk in a diabetes awareness campaign. However, she continues to extol heavy foods on her Food Network program, adding only a small disclaimer that she supports moderation when it comes to the consumption of gut-busting delights.

Critics have accused Deen of a callous nonchalance when it comes to the consequences of such a diet. Her recent contribution to the February 2012 issue of O: The Oprah Magazine's collections of celebrity mottoes isn't troubling on its own, but her position as a public spokeswoman for food and her type 2 diabetes make the pronouncement "might as well eat a cookie" troubling to some.
<h3>'Might as well eat a cookie'</h3>
Slinging butter and consuming doughnut bacon cheeseburgers with fried egg are tasty, but these behaviors don't support Deen's stated goal of proposing “simple ways” to manage diabetes, notes People.
<blockquote>"I was determined to share my positive approach and not let diabetes stand in the way of enjoying my life," Deen said. "I'm excited to team up with Novo Nordisk on this initiative to show others that managing diabetes does not have to stop you from enjoying the things you love."</blockquote>
Television chef, world traveler and raconteur Anthony Bourdain reportedly “takes no pleasure” in Paula Deen's illness, but he isn't backing down from his statement that she is “the worst, most dangerous person in America.”
<blockquote>“When you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got type 2 diabetes ... it's in bad taste if nothing else,” he said. “How long has she known? I suspect a very long time."</blockquote>
<h3>Deen fires back</h3>
In an interview for TV Guide, Paula Deen remarked that unlike Bourdain, she and her colleagues give “time and money to help the food-deprived, sick children and abandoned animals.” The implication is that Bourdain is an elitist who has lost touch with the average consumer.
<blockquote>"You know, not everybody can afford to pay $58 for prime rib or $650 for a bottle of wine," she said.</blockquote>
However, as Christian Science Monitor notes, many “food elitists” simply want to make healthy choices.
<blockquote>"It’s better food," said food journalist Joel Salatin. "It tastes better. It handles better. And it’s safer. Anyone buying chemicalized, drug-infused food is engaging in risky behavior."</blockquote>

Prolific journalist, best-selling author and public intellectual Christopher Hitchens has succumbed to Stage 4 esophageal cancer, reports Vanity Fair. The 62-year-old Hitchens, who was a noted atheist, died Thursday at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He is survived by wife Carol Blue and children Alexander, Sophia and Antonia, the first two by ex-wife Eleni Meleagrou.
<h2>Cancer discovered in 2010</h2>
Christopher Hitchens received the diagnosis that he had Stage 4 esophageal cancer in June 2010. The treatment regimen forced Hitchens to curtail his public speaking appearances, but his output of essays, book reviews and columns for such publications as Vanity Fair, Slate and The Atlantic did not waver.
<blockquote>"I'm not going to quit until I absolutely have to," Hitchens told a cheering crowd gathered at one of his last public speaking engagements.</blockquote>
<h3>Nurturing the flame of curiosity and defiance</h3>
Hitchens' writing continued to run the gamut of <a href="http://www.newsytype.com/12007-us-pakistan-nuclear-war/">American and global politics</a>, with periodic references to his own sense of mortality. A Vanity Fair piece that published days before he died reaffirmed that he hoped to be awake and aware as he passed away, “in order to 'do' death in the active and not the passive sense.”
<blockquote>"I do, still, try to nurture that little flame of curiosity and defiance: willing to play out the string to the end and wishing to be spared nothing that properly belongs to a life span," he wrote.</blockquote>
<h3>From Socialism to the war on terror</h3>
Born in Portsmouth, England, in 1949, Hitchens studied at Oxford University before becoming a journalism during the 1970s. An early interest in Socialism and Marxism informed his early writing. In the early 1980s, Hitchens emigrated to the U.S. and became a regular with The Nation magazine for 20 years. He left the liberal publication due to its editors' stance on the Iraq war.

By 2007, Christopher Hitchens won a National Magazine Award for his commentary, and he also gained U.S. citizenship. Named one of the 25 most important liberals by Forbes in 2009, Hitchens still managed to surprise many liberals in his support of President George W. Bush's “war on terror.”
<h3>Best-selling author and critic of religion</h3>
Perhaps the most recognized portion of Christopher Hitchens' literary output were his nearly 20 books, including the best-seller “God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything” and “Hitch-22: A Memoir.” Hitchens' stance on public figures in politics and religion like Henry Kissinger, Bill Clinton, Mother Theresa and Jerry Falwell was pointedly outspoken, as was his view of organized religion in general.

In an August 2010 interview with The Atlantic colleague Jeffrey Goldberg, Hitchens made it clear that even if he somehow came to denounce atheism while on his deathbed – in much the same way as famous historical figures like the astronomer Galileo Galilei – it would be a “hollow gesture”:
<blockquote>"The entity making such a remark might be a raving, terrified person whose cancer has spread to the brain," he said. "I can't guarantee that such an entity wouldn't make such a ridiculous remark. But no one recognizable as myself would ever make such a ridiculous remark."</blockquote>
<h3>Christopher Hitchens denies the US is a 'Christian nation'</h3>

ESPN has decided to terminate its relationship with country-western singer Hank Williams Jr. following remarks he made Monday on Fox News comparing President Obama to Hitler. At first defiant, the singer claimed his First Amendment rights had been violated. Later, Williams apologized for the remarks, but still remains on the outs with the cable sports giant.
<h2>Song pulled from Monday cablecast</h2>
The cable network has used Williams' song "Are You Ready" to open its Monday Night Football broadcasts for the past 20 years. But after Williams made caustic remarks about the nation's chief executive, ESPN pulled the intro from its broadcast Monday evening. The network said it was "very disappointed" with the singer's remarks.

ESPN said the song's suspension was for one week, and a decision will be made later as to its future relationship with Williams.
<h3>Williams claims it was his decision</h3>
In a statement on his website, Williams claimed the decision to pull the song was his:
<blockquote>“After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made MY decision. By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It’s been a great run.”</blockquote>
<h3>Controversial remarks</h3>
The controversial remarks that started all this were spoken Monday morning on the Fox News program Fox and Friends. Referring to the president's much-publicized golfing relationship with House Speaker John Boehner, Williams said it is "like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu."

Fox and Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade said he didn't understand the singer's remarks. Williams replied, "I'm glad you don't, brother, because a lot of people do. They're the enemy ... Obama and Biden! Are you kidding?"
<h3>Williams apologizes</h3>
Tuesday, however, Williams issued an apology on his website:
<blockquote>"I have always been very passionate about Politics and Sports and this time it got the Best or Worst of me. The thought of the Leaders ofboth Parties Jukin and High Fiven on a Golf course, while so many Families are Struggling to get by simply made me Boil over and make a Dumb statement and I am very Sorry if it Offended anyone. I would like to Thank all my supporters. This was Not written by some Publicist."</blockquote>
<h3>ESPN makes it permanent</h3>
Thursday ESPN announced that it would be severing its relationship with Williams permanently. The statement said, essentially, that Williams needs ESPN more than ESPN needs him:
<blockquote>"We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams, Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years. The success of Monday Night Football has always been about the games and that will continue."</blockquote>

Leisha Hailey, the 40-year-old actress who starred in the Showtime series “The L Word” as bisexual journalist Alice Pieszecki, tweeted that Southwest Airlines kicked her and girlfriend Camila Grey off Flight 2274 on Monday because the couple shared a kiss while on the plane. Southwest is claiming it was obscene language that prompted their ejection, reports Radar Online.
<h2>Lesbians kissing on 'a family airline'</h2>
According to Hailey's tweet, she and Grey were escorted off the Southwest flight after becoming upset when a flight attendant implied that kissing Grey violated the airline's commitment to “family values.”
<blockquote>"Southwest Air endorses homophobic employees," tweeted Leisha Hailey. "Since when is showing affection toward someone you love illegal? I want to know what Southwest Airlines considers a 'family.'"</blockquote>
Hailey went on to tweet: "Boycott Southwest Air if you are gay. They don't like us." She also demanded a public apology from Southwest Airlines.
<h3>Southwest said Hailey's behavior was 'excessive'</h3>
In its defense, Southwest claims that passenger complaints of Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey's behavior necessitated action on the part of the flight attendant.
<blockquote>"Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender," Southwest wrote in a public statement. "The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight."</blockquote>
<h3>Was profane language the true culprit?</h3>
The airline had declined comment on the issue, outside of the first written public statement. However, the airline later released a second statement in which it claimed profane language from Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey factored heavily in the Southwest flight attendant's decision to eject them from the aircraft.
<blockquote>“Although we have reports of what customers characterize as an excessive public display of affection, ultimately their aggressive reaction led to their removal from the aircraft. We do not tolerate discrimination against anyone for any reason. In this situation, their removal was directly and solely related to the escalated conversation that developed on board the aircraft,” read the latter statement.</blockquote>
<h3>'You can't whisper hate'</h3>
Despite the PR spin given by Southwest Airlines regarding its support of the LGBT community, Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey have not backed down from their accusations of homophobia, writes Radar Online.
<blockquote>“In no way were our actions on Southwest Airlines excessive, inappropriate or vulgar... We were simply being affectionate like any normal couple,” read a statement from Hailey. “We take full responsibility for getting verbally upset with the flight attendant after being told it was a ‘family airline.’ No matter how quietly homophobia is whispered, it doesn’t make it any less loud. You can’t whisper hate.”</blockquote>

Legendary singer/songwriter Bob Dylan has an exhibition of paintings currently on display in New York. The paintings, which are billed as being “firsthand depictions of people, street scenes, architecture and landscape" from Dylan's travels in Asia, are, according to some, actually stolen images from previously published photographs.
<h2>'The Asian Series'</h2>
Bob Dylan's work as a painter is less known than his music. Most fans only know his paintings through the covers of his albums "Self Portrait" and "Planet Waves." The new exhibit, featuring 18 works, opened at New York's Gagosian Gallery on Sept. 20. But the exhibit, titled “The Asia Series,” has drawn fire from fans and critics alike.

Comments on the Bob Dylan fan website, Expecting Rain, have pointed out similarities between Dylan's painting "Trade," depicting two Chinese men, and a 1948 photograph by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Another, "Opium," used as a cover for the exhibit's catalog, appears to be copied from photographer Léon Busy. A full third of the 18 canvases appear to be images lifted from photos by Flickr contributor Okinawa Soba.
<h3>Painter added 'tags'</h3>
Soba posted a comment on the Expecting Rain site:
<blockquote>"Prior to posting on Flickr, I had added an 'artificial tag element' to an image that was re-painted into Dylan's work hanging there in the Gallery! All I could think was, 'Oh my God. Dylan painted my fake line!'"</blockquote>
A statement from the Gagosian Gallery Monday defended Mr. Dylan's work:
<blockquote>“While the composition of some of Bob Dylan’s paintings is based on a variety of sources, including archival, historic images, the paintings’ vibrancy and freshness come from the colors and textures found in everyday scenes he observed during his travels.”</blockquote>
Journalist Michael Gray, on his blog Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, noted the resemblance of one of Dylan's painting to a Dmitri Kessel photograph:
<blockquote>“The most striking thing is that Dylan has not merely used a photograph to inspire a painting: he has taken the photographer’s shot composition and copied it exactly. He hasn’t painted the group from any kind of different angle. ... He’s replicated everything as closely as possible. That may be a game he’s playing with his followers, but it’s not a very imaginative approach to painting.”</blockquote>
<h3>Previous claims of plagiarism</h3>
This is not the first time Dylan has been accused of plagiarism. Music critic Scott Warmuth has pointed to certain passages in Dylan's 2004 memoir, “Chronicles: Volume One,” that were disturbingly similar to ones by authors as diverse as Robert Greene and Archibald MacLeish. Others have noted the similarity of certain songs on the 2006 album "Modern Times" to the poetry of Henry Timrod.
<h3>Dylan speaks</h3>
In an interview for the Gagosian exhibition catalog, Dylan said:

“I paint mostly from real life. It has to start with that. Real people, real street scenes, behind the curtain scenes, live models, paintings, photographs, staged setups, architecture, grids, graphic design. Whatever it takes to make it work. What I’m trying to bring out in complex scenes, landscapes, or personality clashes, I do it in a lot of different ways. I have the cause and effect in mind from the beginning to the end. But it has to start with something tangible.”

Neither Dylan or his representatives have commented on the accusations.

Actor Matthew Fox today found himself on the wrong end of a lawsuit. He is accused of physically attacking a woman last month. No criminal charges were filed in that incident.
<h2>Actor was very inebriated, reports say</h2>
The lawsuit stems from an incident in Cleveland, Ohio, last month. The 45-year-old, Pennsylvania-born actor -- best known for playing Jack Shephard on the hit TV series "Lost" -- was in Cleveland to shoot the film "I, Alex Cross."

Fox was allegedly very inebriated when he stepped onto a private bus and demanded the driver take him to the Ritz Carlton hotel. The driver of the bus, 29-year-old Heather Borman, according to court documents, "politely advised him he was not permitted to board" because the bus was booked for a private bachelor party.
<h3>Bus driver fought back</h3>
The actor persisted, and Borman tried to block him from entering. At that time, Fox allegedly began striking the woman with his fists, punching her in the chest, arms and groin. Borman "instinctively defended herself," fighting back and bloodying the actor's lip.
<h3>'She was shocked when he popped her'</h3>
J. Norman Stark, Borman's attorney, told E! News that his client was shocked by Fox's behavior:
<blockquote>"She was shocked when he popped her. And when he kept hitting her, she turned around and slugged him and bloodied his lip. And then he still wouldn't stop so she smacked him in the back of the head. Then his friends grabbed him and pulled him off, away from the bus, and then the police came and handcuffed him but then turned him over to friends to take him back to his hotel quietly."</blockquote>
<h3>No criminal charges filed</h3>
Fox was briefly detained by police and was then released without charges being filed. However, today the bus driver filed a lawsuit asking for more than $25,000 in damages for assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Fox's lawyers have declined to comment on the matter.

A jihadist website with alleged ties to al-Qaida has urged American followers to kill comedian and talk show host David Letterman. The site said Letterman deserved to have his tongue cut out for remarks about a slain terrorist leader.
<h2>Letterman joked about slain terror leader</h2>
The SITE intelligence group, which monitors and translates terrorist websites, says that the writer of the post was angered by Letterman's comments about Ilyas Kashmiri -- believed to be al-Qaida's military chief -- who was killed during a June drone strike in Pakistan.

On his late-night talk show, Letterman joked about Kasmiri's death and emphasized it by drawing a finger across his throat.
<h3>'A clearing house for al-Qaida'</h3>
The message was posted on the website Shumukh al-Islam, which, according to analyst Adam Raisman is "a clearing house for al-Qaida material."

The message on the website said "This despicable person mocked the leaders of the mujahideen." The post went on to entreat all U.S. Muslims to cut out the tongue "of this lowly Jew and shut it forever." Letterman is not Jewish.
<h3>FBI taking threat seriously</h3>
Peter Donald, an FBI spokesman, said that the agency is taking the threat seriously and looking into the matter. "In the post 9/11 world, we take all of these threats seriously," he  said.

An unnamed law enforcement official was quoted by CNN, saying these kinds of threats were common:
<blockquote>"We see these kinds of threats frequently against people in business and media. Usually nothing comes of them, but we check them all out."</blockquote>
Letterman's publicist, as well as CBS executives, declined to comment on the matter.
<h3>Other comedians who received death threats</h3>
Letterman is not the first outspoken comedian to receive death threats from Muslim militants in recent years. Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of the controversial animated television program <a href="http://www.newsytype.com/9138-south-park-cheesy-poofs/">"South Park,"</a> received a threat in 2010 for depicting the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam, in a bear costume. The threat originated from a 21-year old Virginia man who was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

British comedic actor Sacha Baron Cohen received a threat on his life from the Islamic extremist group, the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, in 2009 for his depiction of the group in the motion picture "Bruno."

Former Playboy Playmate Shannon McLaughlin was arrested at Orlando International Airport Monday night. McLaughlin was attempting to board a flight carrying a concealed handgun.
<h2>Playmate and grad student</h2>
McLaughlin, 26, was the Playboy Playmate in the July 2010 issue of the men's magazine. She is also a grad student studying for her master's degree at the University of Central Florida.

According to WKMG TV in Orlando, Fla., McLaughlin was was arrested while trying to board a plane for Los Angles in order to attend a photo shoot.
<h3>A handgun hidden in duffel bag</h3>
The arrest affidavit reports that McLaughlin placed her duffel bag into an X-ray machine as she was passing through security. A Transportation Security Administration worker "saw what appeared to be a handgun on the screen." The worker found a Ruger SAA .45 long Colt handgun in her bag. The gun was loaded with six hollow point bullets.
<h3>McLaughlin says gun belonged to boyfriend</h3>
When questioned, McLaughlin said the gun belonged to her boyfriend and that she had no idea it was in her bag. She was quick to point out that she does possess a license to carry a concealed weapon. She did not, however, have the permit in her possession.
<h3>Jailed Monday night</h3>
McLaughlin was arrested and held overnight at an Orange County jail on misdemeanor charges. She later posted a bond of $250 and was released.
<h3>A stepping stone</h3>
A Florida native, McLaughlin grew up in Jupiter and went to Palm Beach Gardens High School. When chosen to be the July Playmate last year, she told reporters at WPTV "I think it's going to be a huge platform to work with Playboy and all the working opportunities that are going to be available to me. And then, hopefully, it will lead to different movie roles or hosting positions and stuff like that."

The infamous “Jackie O tapes,” which were recorded by historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. months after President John F. Kennedy's assassination on Nov. 22, 1963, will soon be revealed to the public. Jacqueline Onassis reportedly believed that Lyndon Johnson and a “cabal of Texas tycoons” were responsible for Kennedy's death.
<h2>Jackie O suspected conspiracy</h2>
The Daily Mail reports that the Jackie O tapes will clearly show her suspicion of President Kennedy's successor. Onassis, who went on to marry Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, was convinced that then Vice President Lyndon Johnson and a group of southern U.S. businessmen orchestrated Kennedy's assassination in Dallas, Texas. In Jackie O's estimation, suspected lone gunman Lee Harvey Oswald was part of a larger conspiracy.

According to the Daily Mail, Jackie Onassis had ordered that the tapes not be released until 50 years after her death. While the reasons for this aren't entirely clear, it is believed that she feared her revelations would make her family targets for revenge.
<h3>Daughter Caroline Kennedy agreed to early release</h3>
Just 17 years after Jackie O's death from cancer when she was 64, daughter Caroline Kennedy has agreed to release the Jackie O tapes. ABC has cemented plans and the BBC are currently in negotiations to air television programs regarding the tapes. ABC executives are touting her recorded statements as being “explosive.”

A major condition of the release is that ABC would not air its dramatic series about the Kennedy family in which Katie Holmes plays Jacqueline Onassis. Against Caroline's wishes, some episodes of the series aired on an independent cable channel and on BBC2 in the U.K.
<h3>From affairs to renewed faith</h3>
In addition to her opinions regarding LBJ and the John F. Kennedy assassination, Jackie Onassis allegedly reveals her knowledge that President Kennedy had an affair with a 19-year-old White House intern. Jackie O confesses to her own extramarital affairs – corroborated by biographer Edward Klein – with such men as film actor William Holden and Fiat automobile founder Gianni Agnelli. Despite the infidelity, insiders claim that Jacqueline and John had “turned a corner” and were planning to have more children mere months before Kennedy's assassination.
