A crime spree carried out by a three siblings who have come to be called the Dougherty Gang by the press has come to an end. After less than two weeks on the run, the trio was spotted in Colorado by authorities. Police were able to apprehend them after they wrecked their car in a high speed chase.
Crash during high speed chase results in apprehension of fugitives
The brief run from the law and crime spree of the Dougherty Gang has captivated the press for the past week, as three dangerous fugitives made their way across the country. However, the flight of the Dougherty Gang has been brought to an end following a high-speed chase in Colorado that ended when their car crashed, according to the Los Angeles Times, just south of Pueblo, Colo. Grace Lee Dougherty, Ryan Edward Dougherty and Dylan Dougherty Stanley have been on the run since Aug. 2, according to the Christian Science Monitor, when they fled from a police officer who was trying to stop their car for speeding in Pasco County, Fla. Alerts went out to the media after they fled, until authorities were tipped off in Colorado.
Outlaws far from loveable misfits
Grace Lee Dougherty, 29, according to USA Today, has five felony arrests for hit-and-run and six misdemeanor arrests on her record. Ryan Dougherty, 21, has been arrested on 14 felony charges since 2007 including burglary, drug possession and destroying evidence. He was also recently placed on the Florida sex offender list, having been convicted of sending lascivious text messages to an 11-year-old girl. Ryan Dougherty, according to ABC, is also about to be a father; his girlfriend is expecting their first child. Dylan Dougherty Stanley, 26, did not have nearly the criminal career of his siblings prior to the crime spree that began Aug. 2.
Stolen car spotted at campground
The Doughertys began their trek across half the country on the run from justice when they sped away from and fired at least 20 shots at a police officer in Zephyrhills, Fla., flattening a tire on the officer’s car. They robbed a bank in Valdosta, Ga., later that day, according to USA Today. They later allegedly stole a white 2006 Subaru Impreza in Texas, according to ABC. On Tuesday, they were spotted buying camping supplies from an REI store in Colorado Springs. A tip was given to Colorado state troopers Wednesday morning, when someone spotted the white Subaru they had stolen at a campground. After the Colorado State Patrol tried to pull them over outside Pueblo, Colo., they began speeding away, reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, firing at police. Officers deployed spike strips, causing the car to hit a guard rail. One of the brothers escaped on foot, but was quickly captured. They face charges of attempted murder for shooting at police, among other pending charges.
