Chandler, Ariz., resident Joshua Seto, 27, was carrying fiancee Cara Christopher’s pink pistol in the front waistband of his pants Tuesday during a jaunt to Fry’s Food Store in Phoenix. A gun accident occurred, sending a bullet through his penis and left leg, reports ABC15.
Pink pistol in the waistband was his first problem
According to an officer on the scene Tuesday, Joshua Seto was carrying a pink pistol in the waistband of his pants, which is very unsafe. Once the firearm discharged and the bullet traced its path through Seto’s penis and leg, intense bleeding began immediately.
Christopher, 26, made the 911 call right away.
“He’s still coherent and everything, but he’s bleeding quite a lot,” said Christopher to the 911 operator.
Christopher was directed to apply pressure to the wound with a dry towel or T-shirt. She was also advised by the 911 operator not to look directly at the penis wound. But that bird had already flown.
“I did look at it,” Christopher said. “It’s pretty bad.”
Media reports indicate that Seto is currently in recovery. It is unclear whether the damage done to his penis and leg will be permanent.
Not a Son of Anarchy
The Joshua Seto penis shooting has prompted Arizona police to remind gun owners that holsters are a safe place to carry concealed handguns — waistbands are not. Chandler Police Detective Seth Tyler said that popular TV shows that glamorize outlaw gun culture like “Sons of Anarchy” are unrealistic. A gun shoved into a pair of jeans on TV is likely a light rubber duplicate, not a metal gun that can slip and accidentally discharge.
“Whenever you handle a firearm, whether you are a novice or experienced, always treat firearms as though they are loaded,” said Tyler. “If you are going to carry a handgun on your person, use a holster, not your waistband.”
Reflections of Plaxico
The case of a man like Joshua Seto shooting his own penis in a gun accident is reminiscent of what happened on Nov. 29, 2008, to then New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress. While Burress did not shoot his own penis, he did carry a handgun in the waistband of his sweatpants, and that gun did accidentally go off, sending a bullet into his right thigh. Burress did jail time for having a concealed weapon in New York. Arizona concealed carry laws are much more forgiving, but it is unclear whether Seto will face charges.
