The literary sub-genre of zombie lit has been exploding, thanks to a modern zombie film renaissance. A spate of zombie themed novels followed a couple of years of some very successful zombie films such as “28 Days Later” and the remake of “Dawn of the Dead.” “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “World War Z” were some of the most popular book series. Recently it was confirmed that Brad Pitt will star in the film version of “World War Z.”
Let the zombie apocalypse begin
The precursor to “World War Z” was a novel called “The Zombie Survival Guide,” released in 2003. The book is a fictional “how to” on dealing with the threat of zombies. “World War Z” came out in 2006, a follow up to that book, which is a collection of interviews with zombie apocalypse survivors. Max Brooks is the author of both novels, the son of Mel Brooks and a former SNL writer. The project has been trying to get off the ground since it was picked up for a movie in 2007.
This might actually be really good
According to MTV, it was announced at Comic-Con in San Diego that Brad Pitt has been confirmed to star. Paramount has also optioned other works by Max Brooks to be filmed. The director is slated to be Marc Forster, the director of Quantum of Solace, but that could change at any moment. There have not been as many zombie films of late, so the genre may be on the way out.
Not the only zombie film within the works
Along with “World War Z,” the smash success “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” has also been optioned for filming. The mish-mash of Jane Austen’s classic novel and zombies, ninjas and carnage will come out sometime in the next year and will star Natalie Portman.
