Former-Beatle Paul McCartney’s ex-wife, Heather Mills, says a senior journalist at Britain’s Mirror Group of newspapers admitted to hacking into her personal voice mail in 2001. The newspaper was run by current CNN host Piers Morgan at the time.

Mills contacted by reporter

Mills said to the BBC Wednesday that she received a call from a reporter in 2001 about an argument she’d had with her then-boyfriend, Paul McCartney. She says that the reporter was “quoting verbatim the messages from my machine.” When she pressed the reporter to find out how he obtained the information, he finally admitted that he did hear the argument on her voice messages and would not run the story.

Morgan wrote of hearing tape

Mills, who divorced McCartney in 2008, was certain the voice she spoke with was not that of then-editor Piers Morgan. However, she said, Morgan wrote in The Mirror in 2006 that he had heard a tape of Paul pleading with Heather on her mobile phone.

Morgan wrote:

“It was heartbreaking. The couple had clearly had a tiff. Heather had fled to India, and Paul was pleading with her to come back. He sounded lonely, miserable and desperate, and even sang ‘We Can Work It Out’ into the answer phone.”

Mills concluded that there was no way Morgan could have known the content of the tape unless her voice mail had been hacked into.

Charges denied

Morgan and The Mirror have completely denied the charges. A spokesman for the Mirror Group said to the BBC Wednesday:

“Our position is clear. All our journalists work within the criminal law and the PCC (Press Complaints Commission) code of conduct.”

In a recent Twitter feed, Morgan reacted to a disparaging comment made by a British Member of Parliament concerning the hacking incident:

“That MP just claimed I boasted in my book of using phone-hacking for a scoop. Complete nonsense. Just read the book. I’ve never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, or published any stories based on the hacking of a phone.”

Newspaper hacking scandals

Rupert Murdoch’s Voice of the World tabloid was closed down in July after news surfaced that investigators working for the paper had hacked into the voice mail of a 13-year-old girl who had gone missing and was later discovered dead.
