Game show host Alex Trebek was injured early Wednesday when he chased down a burglary suspect inside the San Francisco hotel where he was staying with his wife. The suspect in custody has denied the charges.

At a San Francisco hotel

Trebek, 71, who hosts the game show “Jeopardy!,” was in San Francisco hosting the National Geographic World Championship. The incident occurred about 2:30 a.m. at the hotel where Trebek and his wife were staying.

Wakes to see figure in room

“I woke up and saw a figure in our hotel bedroom, and I thought I was dreaming,” Trebek said on NBC’s Today show Thursday. “I realized immediately that someone had been in the room, and I put on my underwear and ran down the hall to see if I could find her.”

A valuable heirloom

The burglar allegedly took an undisclosed amount of cash and a bracelet. The bracelet, which Trebek wears for every taping of Jeopardy!, belonged to his mother.

Trebek eventually caught up with the suspect:

“She came out of the middle room where the ice machine is, and I said, ‘What were you doing in our room?’ She said, ‘I wasn’t in your room,’ so I said, ‘What were you doing?’ She said, ‘I was visiting friends.’ I said, ‘No you weren’t.’”

Trebek injured in the pursuit

During pursuit of the alleged bandit, Trebek slipped and fell, snapping his Achilles tendon. “I managed to hobble back to the phone and inform security,” he said.

Suspect in custody

San Francisco police took Lucinda Moyer into custody. She was booked on felony burglary and possession of stolen property. She denied the charges and, according to NBC news, claimed she “was only arrested because she’s a celebrity.”

A host on crutches

Trebek hosted the National Geographic World Championship later that day on crutches. He joked about the incident at the event, telling one participant:

“You’re going to be tempted to blurt our responses. If you do, I will have to chase you out!”

But the best line came at the conclusion of Trebek’s interview on NBC’s Today show when host Matt Lauer queried, “Alex Trebek sleeps in the nude?”

Surgery on Friday

Trebek is scheduled for surgery on Friday and should be in a cast for about six weeks.
