Ben Affleck weighs in on movie clip used in debt debates

During Tuesday’s debt ceiling talks, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) showed a clip from the Ben Affleck movie “The Town” in an attempt to motivate Republicans to back House Speaker John Boehner’s debt plan. Affleck says they should have used a different movie.

Movie scene used to whip up support

The critically acclaimed 2010 film “The Town” was written and directed by Ben Affleck. In the scene McCarthy chose to play, Doug MacRay, a bank robber played by Ben Affleck, entreats a friend played by Jeremy Renner to help in a revenge act. “I need your help. I can’t tell you what it is. You can never ask me about it later,” he says. To which his friend replies, “Whose car are we gonna take?”

Many disturbed by implications

Many found it an odd ploy and perhaps a little bit disturbing. Some saw using the clip as endorsing strong arm methods to accomplish the GOP’s goals. Washington Post humor columnist Alexandra Petri wrote, “Great. With inspirational tactics like this, who needs detractors?”  Petri went on to suggest scenes from movies as diverse as “Up” and “the Godfather” that she felt made analogies every bit as sensible as McCarthy’s strategy.

Not entirely ineffective

Apparently the move did have some effect. Florida Republican Rep. Allen West stood up after the scene and endorsed the sentiment by saying, “I’m ready to drive the car.”

Affleck suggests another movie

Affleck, who is in Turkey directing “Argo,” a film about the Tehran hostage crisis, didn’t know how to react.  “I don’t know if this is a compliment or the ultimate repudiation,” said the actor. “But if they’re going to be watching movies, I think ‘The Company Men’ is more appropriate.”

“The Company Men,” (2010) written and directed by John Wells, is about three men trying to survive a round of corporate downsizing during the recession. One of the men becomes so depressed he commits suicide.
