In what is being considered a terrorist attack, a powerful explosion ripped through several buildings near the Norwegian capitol in Oslo today. Hours after the explosion, a gunman opened fire on a youth camp about 20 miles away. A suspect is in custody and believed to be connected to both events.
Bombing in Oslo
A bomb, possibly a car bomb, went off in Oslo today killing at least 10 people and injured more than 12. Police reports say there were at least two other bombs that did not go off. More people are still believed to be alive and trapped inside the buildings.
Gunman opens fire at a youth camp
Later, a gunman dressed as a police officer opened fire on a youth camp run by the country’s ruling party, the Labor Party. The Labor Party is the party of the current prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, who was due to visit the camp the following day. Nearly 1,000 members of the party were in attendance at the time, most of them teenagers. The camp is about 20 miles from Oslo.
One eye witness told Norway broadcasters that at least 20 people are dead in the shootings, though police confirm only 10. The AP reports that police are sending anti-terrorism chiefs to the youth camp and that they are are evacuating the island where the camp is located.
One person arrested and connected with both events
The BBC reports that at least one person has been arrested and is being detained at a local police station for questioning in connection with the shooting incident. Police say the shooter is also connected to the Oslo bombing.
The Norwegian media reports that the man arrested is Nordic in appearance, was dressed as a policeman and claimed to be there to aid in security.
Security level has been raised
The security level in Norway has been raised and people are advised to stay in their homes.
