Most parents want to spoil their children, and when they have the means to do so, many go overboard. Mariah Carey’s house-sized nursery is taking the cake. The cost of the nursery has not been made public, but the bill is well into the millions already.

Giant luxury nursery for Mariah Carey’s twins

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey are expecting twins. The babies are due in March, and the couple is extremely excited after trying for years to get pregnant. An entire wing of the Beverly Hills mansion is being turned into a huge luxury nursery for the babies. Initial reports of the nursery make it sound more like a fairy tale than an actual nursery: $2,200 cribs, a $1 million sofa used by Michael Jackson, 18 carat gold trim on the walls and diamond encrusted iPods.

Cost of the giant luxury nursery

The price tag on Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon’s nursery is rising quickly. One source reported the cost at $1.3 million, but that estimate is probably low. More than likely, the final cost will be $2 or $3 million because $1 million is being spent on the crushed velvet couch alone. In the giant luxury nursery, there will be $3,000 rocking chairs and 42-inch flat screen TVs. Carey is also paying a designer to help decorate the wing of the house.

Most struggle to afford to raise a child

The price put of raising children goes up every year. Over the course of their child’s entire life, most parents won’t spend what Mariah Carey is putting into her nursery. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s yearly “expenditures on children” report  says in 2010, a middle-income family could expect to spend $222,360 raising a child. In comparison, Mariah Carey is spending about that much just on the gold carat trim in her twins’ room.
