If you are into music, the Grammy Awards are for you. This year’s Grammys were especially surprising. Esperanza Spalding ended up being the biggest surprise of the 2011 Grammy awards. The jazz artist took home the Best New Artist award. There were a few other surprises during the 2011 Grammy Awards, however.

Grammy Awards Best New Artist for 2011

There was controversy at the 2011 Grammy Awards as usual. This year, the Best New Artist was the cause. Justin Beiber, Drake, Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine and Portland artist Esperanza Spalding were all nominated. Fans of Justin Beiber took over Spalding’s Wikipedia page out of anger after Spalding won. Industry watchers were also surprised at the choice; Spalding has released three albums and  has a fourth in the works, stretching the definition of “new” artist.

The full Grammy Winners list

There were a lot of viewers for the Grammy Awards 2011, and they were in for several surprises. A couple of awards were given to Lady Antebellum. These included Record of the year and Song of the year. Because it won Album of the Year, many were upset with Arcade Fire. The rest of the winner’s list was not surprising — lots of Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum, Muse, Usher and Cee Lo Green. The full list of Grammy winners can be seen on the Grammy website.

Good and bad

The performances are almost as important as the awards at the Grammy Awards. Cee Lo Green partnered with Gwenyth Paltrow and several puppets for a sanitized version of his winning song, “F— You,” sung earlier in the year by Paltrow on “Glee.” Lady Gaga appeared in an alien egg and performed in what appeared to be a full latex outfit. There weren’t any words forgotten in Christina Aguilera’s performance. However, she fell on her heels after the cameras were off her. Many were wondering about Mick Jagger’s health, though, especially after his performance.
