Stroke for Serene Branson

CBS’s Los Angeles reporter Serene Branson has received two Emmy Awards herself. During a live segment from this year’s Grammy Awards, Branson started to slur her words and couldn’t be understood. For 10 to 15 seconds, Branson looked increasingly worried and appeared to not be able to form words. This is one of the major warning signs of a stroke, and paramedics were called. The video was one Twitter users originally pointed and laughed at, but later, worry for Branson replaced mockery.

Now, Branson is ‘feeling fine’

After a possible stroke, Branson was not put in the hospital, contrary to initial reports. CBS 2 News released a statement:

“Serene Branson was examined by paramedics on scene immediately after her broadcast. Her vital signs were normal. She was not hospitalized. As a precautionary measure, a colleague gave her a ride home, and she says that she is feeling fine this morning.”

Slurred speech for other reasons

The rumor of Serene Branson getting hospitalized because she possibly had a stroke at the Grammys traveled fast. The slurred speech she displayed was what had caused this rumor to spread. Slurred speech is one of the most common indicators of a stroke. Stroke, however, is not the only cause of slurred speech. Dysathria, the medical name for distorted speech, can be caused by many things: Brain injury, tumor, facial weakness, certain medications and facial paralysis can all cause slurred speech.
