Fans of 1980s cartoons are filled with excitement over the news that a “Thundercats” remake will debut on Cartoon Network later this year. Bleeding Cool indicates that Japanamation company Studio4°C has released new “Thundercats” character art that includes Lion-O, Cheetara, Tygra and Panthro. The look is new and the mythology will be stripped down, said producer Michael Jelenic to MTV News.
A sci-fi/fantasy tale about a race of cats who get out of Thundera, their home planet, in just enough time before it is destroyed — that’s the back story of the 1980s “ThunderCats” animated series in a nutshell. The evils of Mumm-Ra and the Mutants of Plun-Darr inhabit the third Earth, where the Thundercats end up after their escape. The leader, Lion-O, unknowingly took them to a magical and technologically advance place where fairies wait to lead victims into addictions.
There will be changes to the Cartoon Network’s “ThunderCats” remake, though. Jelenic explained:
“It’s a pretty complicated back story that borrows from a lot of other sci-fi stuff, like ‘Superman’ and ‘Star Wars.’ In the (old) version, there’s something like three different planets involved, and they all converge onto one planet, and nobody’s really connected. I just wanted to bring that all together.”
Giving the characters a twist
Jelenic said that the characters will be recognizable by many, but guardian Snarf of Lion-O will be much more fearsome. Jelenic’s last few years have been consumed with cartoons about Batman. Many are waiting to see whether the Dark Knight has influenced Jelenic’s sensibilities.
Cartoon Network will soon debut the new “ThunderCats” cartoon. The air date has not been announced, but it will be this year.
