Teething time is an ordeal for youngsters and parents. Tablets that help soothe the gums can sometimes be the only thing that permits a good night’s sleep, making them a mainstay for well-prepared moms and dads. Yet Hyland’s Teething Tablets, perhaps the most popular brand for this situation, has pulled back the curtain to reveal a scary truth. Hyland is voluntarily recalling the product because of problems with toxicity, says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The teething relief product has some belladonna in it, which can be lethal if ingested in large amounts.

Hyland’s Teething Tablets go in the trash

Hyland’s advice is to get the teething tablets out of your home. There are safe replacements available for parents. Call 877-496-5044 or go to if you need replacements. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. are the times you can get a hold of the customer service call center.

Belladonna must be ‘carefully controlled’

The FDA reports that while belladonna does have a history of being used as an anesthetic, its use must be carefully controlled. When involving young children, this is especially true. Parents are advised that there were “inconsistent amounts of belladonna” according to laboratory analysis. This is in part because the FDA has gotten reports of children suffering adverse effects consistent with belladonna toxicity (dilated pupils, blurred vision, light sensitivity, confusion, rash, constipation, etc.). Considering that Hyland’s Teething Tablets packages are not manufactured with child resistant caps, the danger is obvious.
