Associated Press reports indicate that Lana Lawless, a 57-year-old transgender golfer, has leveled a lawsuit at the LPGA for barring her from competition. It seems that the LPGA has a rule that competitors must be born female, so a U.S. District Court in San Francisco will address whether such a rule is legal. Lana Lawless – named after classic Hollywood starlet Lana Turner – claims this rule violates her civil rights as outlined by California law. Lawless wants the law to bar the LPGA from California and demand that Long Drivers of America pay her damages.

Lana Lawless is a competitor in long-drive championship

Lana Lawless won the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship for women in 2008 because of her strike that went 335 yards. She will no longer be allowed to compete with the LPGA standards that have been put in place. The suit Lana Lawless has filed can be compared to another. Moonbattery reports that in 1977, the New York Supreme Court heard a case from transgender tennis pro Renee Richards that is similar.  Lana Lawless is in the right court, Moonbattery says, because Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker made a ruling in favor of gay marriages.

Golfing after the S.W.A.T.

Lana Lawless was a man who worked in Southern California city as a bartender before this change. She also worked as a S.W.A.T. cop for 18 years, reports Right Celebrity. Although Lawless was married, children weren’t in the picture. Lawless explained, “I had a very tough and mean exterior. People didn’t want to mess with me. But Lana was always in there. I had started to go to Los Angeles to the clubs, playing dress-up on the weekends. But I wanted to be a normal girl.”

Competing to be normal

Lana Lawless is against the odds. “I am a woman,” she says. “I’ve lost muscle mass. I don’t have big guns (biceps). They give you a drug that stops you from producing testosterone. Your muscles atrophy. I feel like I don’t have any power.” Everything might change with another landmark legal ruling in her favor.
