Determining standards
These fuel economy standards are called Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFÉ. Wikipedia explains what CAFÉ standards mean. Every car isn’t expected to hit this high standard. It ends up being the average use of fuel for every vehicle a manufacturer has on the road. The first regulations were passed a long time ago. In fact, it happened in 1975. 1990 was the last time CAFÉ standards were increased. The requirement was 27.5 mpg then. There will be an increase to 30.2 miles per gallon in 2011.
The law’s intent
The law would be used to make automakers follow a certain pattern. More electric vehicles and hybrids would have to be made. Then there are the catches. There are a few. Not everyone can afford a new car or is willing to buy one. Hybrid and electric vehicles need to make changes. They aren’t up to a lot of different tasks. A full sized pickup is a vehicle a lot of people require for work. It is big enough to tow heavy loads and large enough to get into hard to reach places.
