It’s tough being a polygamist. In America, it’s also against the law, as Kody Brown, 41, of Lehi, Utah, and the TLC reality show “Sister Wives” has discovered. CBS News reports that Mr. Brown and his three wives — Meri, Janelle and Christine – and fiancee Robyn – are all under investigation for charges of bigamy.
‘Sister Wives’ cast made up of unrepentant bigamists
According to reports, TLC consulted with the Utah Attorney General’s office before producing “Sister Wives.” Such is standard procedure required by the legal department of a cable network, certainly. Scott Troxel, a spokesman for the attorney general, told TLC that while bigamy merits third-degree felony charges in Utah, it’s not something they would typically investigate without more serious issues in play. Child abuse or trafficking would generally have to be going on before the authorities got involved, thanks to manpower and financial issues. But as Radar Online puts it, “Sister Wives” drew the investigation because of the fame quotient. By law, bigamy is defined as any person marrying another person while still being lawfully married to one.
But don’t tell that to the Browns.
Janelle Brown, 40, mother of six of Kody Brown’s 13 kids, put it this way: “If we raise productive, contributing members of society who are moral and ethical, that’s our final goal, whatever their path is.”
‘Sister Wives’ premiered Sept. 27
Monday, Sept. 27, was the one-hour premiere of “Sister Wives” on TLC. In the first episode, Kody Brown announced plans to take on another wife, Robyn, and her three children, says People. Currently, six more shows are scheduled for season one, but Utah authorities may change that schedule for TLC.
“Right now, it’s not in our hands, but we’re not closing the door,” said Troxel regarding the controversial series “Sister Wives.”
