The matter of the Eagles’ Michael Vick and whether he will become the team’s starting quarterback has been settled. Vick has assumed the starting role. After an injury to starting quarterback Kevin Kolb, Vick became the starter. At that point, the question was whether Vick had what it took to be a top flight quarterback anymore. Vick ultimately left the proof in the pudding, putting in impressive performances against the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions. Now, Andy Reid has named Vick the starting quarterback.

Eagles beat the Lions

After Kevin Kolb received a concussion in the opening game against the Green Bay Packers, the job of leading the Eagles offense passed to Michael Vick. Vick took over and put on an inspired performance that nearly culminated in a victory. He was left in the driver’s seat for the Sept. 19 game against the Detroit Lions. Vick had 284 yards passing with two touchdowns, according to Sports Illustrated.  He also recorded more than 30 yards rushing. The Lions attempted a late comeback but ended up coming up just short, as the Eagles won 35 to 32.

Reid into it what you want

Eagles coach Andy Reid had previously promised Kolb would resume his starting position once he was healthy enough. However, he changed his mind not long after Vick won the game in Detroit. The decision may be related to Vick’s known ability to evade defenses, and problems that are developing with the Eagles offensive line. Vick and Reid both have made statements about Kolb’s talent and have every confidence that he will be a great quarterback. Regardless, it will be Michael Vick starting against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fall from grace

Michael Vick was convicted on dog fighting charges and did 18 months in prison. He was hired by the Eagles as a backup and saw limited game time until this year. Michael Vick has never been known as the greatest passer, but his ability to scramble drew comparisons with Steve Young, legendary quarterback for the 49ers.
