The first week of NFL football has concluded. Most fans assume the outcomes of the games deserve the most attention. Instead, the focus on the NFL has mostly been about the Jets reporter debacle, in which a female reporter says she endured catcalls and suggestive comments. The antics of personnel on field and in the locker room were somewhat offensive to her, but the team owner and the coach have phoned her to apologize. The Jets also received some form of comeuppance by losing to the Ravens.
Reporter harassed in locker room
Ines Sainz is a reporter for TV Azteca, a station in Mexico, and went to the New Meadowlands on Saturday to conduct an interview during a Jets practice. She said that she felt uncomfortable by all the cat calling, remarks and behavior from players, as she waited to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez. News of players behaving inappropriately leaked in the following days. Sainz, a married mother of three and former Miss Spain, got a phone call from New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, who apologized to her personally according to FOX News.
Rex Ryan calls to apologize
Coach Rex Ryan also called Sainz to apologize, and she accepted his apology. Ryan has been embroiled in media drama already this season, getting in tiffs with ex-Colts coach Tony Dungy and his former coaching charge Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens. Lewis had the last word when the Jets faced the Ravens. Sainz attended the game on Monday, according to the Boston Herald. The NFL and several womens’ groups have called for the Jets to crack down on offenders.
Professional sportsmen are often held up as examples, and this incident sets a pretty low standard. The loss against the Ravens could easily be seen as punishment for hubris. Perhaps the universe does have a sense of justice.
