The plans made by a Florida church to burn copies of the Koran has caused an enormous controversy. Various officials from the U.S. government have condemned the proposed action, along with world leaders. President Obama weighed in on the proposed Koran burning by the Dove World Outreach Center Church and controversial Pastor Terry Jones, saying that the proposed demonstration won’t be good for anyone. Numerous officials have warned that it will only serve as a recruiting tool for terrorists. Should the church fail to listen to reason, there may be little recourse until after the fact.

President Obama condemns Koran burning

The president, according to the Los Angeles Times, has called for Pastor Terry Jones and the Dove World Outreach Center Church to call off burning the Koran. Obama said that the demonstration will only aid Muslim terrorist organizations as a recruitment tool, as it highlights perceived American bigotry. The president echoed the earlier caution of Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Petraeus warned that the proposed “Burn a Koran Day” will only recruit more to the cause of the Taliban, and will endanger troops serving overseas as well as civilians.

International reaction

The international reaction to the demonstration has been one of outrage. According to CNN, the French and British governments have both condemned the book burning. Interpol, the international police force, also warned that it will only put more people in danger from terrorists. A spokesman for the Taliban said that if the church goes through with it, the Taliban will begin targeting Christians in retaliation. Former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin pleaded for Jones and his church to not go through with it. The Vatican also called for the church to call it off.

Weighing the options

Terry Jones, the pastor of the small church in Gainesville, Fla., has said that the group is weighing the decision. President Obama said he hoped Jones would arrive at the conclusion that the demonstration would only be destructive. Religious tolerance is an important part of the fabric of American society.
