First lady Michelle Obama is being targeted for taking a private, expensive trip to Spain with daughter Sasha and several friends of the Obama family, according to Fox News. Naturally, anything the first family does, whether private or not, is always a public affair, as the media is already towering over Mrs. Obama’s every movement. Everyone now wants a piece of the pie, hungering to know everything the first lady’s private vacation entails.

First lady vacations in Spain, where travel warning was issued

While the president celebrated his 49th birthday with mega-star talk show host Oprah Winfrey in Chicago, first lady Michelle Obama, along with daughter Sasha, 9, and a few friends of the family, took a four-day “private trip” to Spain’s exotic southern coast. While some dodged talks about the price of the trip, others voiced concerns of safety.

According to Fox News, the State Department had issued a travel warning for Americans traveling to Spain, saying that “racist prejudices could lead to the arrest of Afro-Americans who travel to Spain,” a message that was posted on its website. However, the message can no longer be found, as it seems it was pulled quickly after the first lady and daughter Sasha left on their trip. P.J. Crowley, State Department spokesman, when asked if there was in fact a travel warning for Spain, responded: “I don’t believe so.”

The price tag on first lady’s Spain vacation

The biggest problem concerning many citizens regarding the first lady’s vacation trip to Spain is the price of the trip and how it affects taxpayer dollars. New York Daily News writer Andrea Tantaros trash-talked Michelle Obama on Thursday, calling her a “modern day Marie Antoinette” for going on such an expensive vacation while most of the U.S. is financially underwater. The first lady and companions are staying at Hotel Villa Padierna, often described as one of the world’s top 10 luxurious hotels, with rates that range from $500 to almost $3,000 for a single night, according to Yahoo News.

Regardless of who chose the location, whether it was the Obama delegation or Secret Service, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has confirmed that the first lady will take care of her own personal expenses, as will the private party traveling with her. However, the entire trip’s cost will not be fully covered with personal cash, since the first lady always has Secret Service protection and has to travel on board an official Air Force charter plane, which is covered by taxpayer money.
