There are now networks that match people for small odds and ends type jobs. CC by Nik Hewit/Blogspot

TaskRabbit is a new online service now available in just a couple of big cities. TaskRabbit matches up people who have extra time with people who need help. TaskRabbit aims to be more reliable and safer than other online services.

How TaskRabbit works

The basic idea behind TaskRabbit is that some people need help, and others have extra time. The tasks are everything from picking up dog food to running dry cleaning. For anyone who can’t afford a full-time personal assistant, TaskRabbit helps find them task-by-task. If you have a task, you post the details and the price you’re willing to pay. In the end, it’s good for everyone.

Working through TaskRabbit

You can make extra money by picking up jobs from TaskRabbit. You can even bid for or make counteroffers on a task. “Service networking” helps turn extra time into extra cash. There are a few things to consider when you’re deciding whether you should accept a task. First, think about whether the task will cost you any money. Second, consider how much time the task will take you. Lastly, decide whether the task pays you what you’re worth. Keep in mind that if you are going to make more than $600 in one year, you will have to pay 15 percent in self employment tax.

Getting a TaskRabbit outside the big cities

There are only two cities so far – Boston and San Francisco – that have TaskRabbit services. TaskRabbit plans on expanding, but it will be at least a few months before it is functional in any other cities. You can still make extra money with the TaskRabbit concept, even if it’s not in your city. Try hiring yourself out for the things on the Craigslist gigs section.
