A sword-wielding man in a Spider-Man mask found himself in a sticky situation Wednesday morning. The would-be criminal was thwarted in his robbery plans by superhero convenience store clerk armed with a broom handle.
Would-be robber charged Wednesday
According to Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown, Dale Foughty, 56, allegedly tried to rob a Jacksonville, N.C., convenience store at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. He has been charged with attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and injury to personal property.
Store clerk fights back
According to an Onslow County Sheriff’s Office press release, Foughty entered the store wearing a mask and pointed a Samurai sword at the female clerk’s face, saying, “give me your money and I will not hurt you.”
Instead of complying, however, the clerk jabbed the man in the stomach with a broom handle.
“The store clerk then went into a total defense of her life and Spider-Man went into a total defense of his robbery attempt,” the press release said.
Unmasked Spider-Man flees
A second clerk came to the defense of the other and joined the scuffle. In the fray, the alleged robber was unmasked and part of his ponytail was torn out of his head.
“The suspect, now unmasked, was just fighting to survive, got away and ran out of the store,” Brown said.
Shaved head revealed lumps
Investigators tracked the suspect to a nearby house where he had already shaved his head, presumably to avoid detection. Lumps on his head, however, were evidence of the work done by the broom handle.
Not believed to be Spider-Man-at-large
Authorities at this time do not believe Foughty to be responsible for a spate of similar robberies involving a Spider-Man mask in the Wilmington area. That robber, according to the Onslow County Sheriff, has a slimmer build and is taller than the Jacksonville suspect.
Foughty’s bond has been set at $100,000, according to Brown.
