A medieval hobbyist in Washington State is facing possible felony charges after allegedly punishing his teenage daughter. Reportedly, he forced the 16-year-old to fight him with a wooden sword until she collapsed with exhaustion.
Second-degree assault involving weapon
Fremon Seay, 38, and his wife Julie, 42, were arrested Sunday at their home in Yelm, Washington. The couple were both booked on charges of second-degree assault and domestic violence involving a weapon, according to Thurston County authorities.
The authorities were contacted when the victim texted photographs of her bruises to an unnamed source. Thurston County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded, reportedly finding the girl “kneeling and crying” in the front yard.
Father believed she went to crack house
According to the probable-cause statement, Seay told the deputies he believed the girl to have visited a crack house the night before. He reported that she has been “disobedient” and that he could punish her as he saw fit.
The girl was arrested on Saturday night, but her charges remain unclear. Her father picked her up Sunday from the police department in Puyallup, Wash.
A two-hour ‘battle’
When they arrived home from the police department, according to the girl, he beat her with with switches and punched her. Then he allegedly dressed her in padding, chain mail and a helmet “and proceeded to fight with her with a wooden sword,” according to a written statement from deputies. After about two hours the girl collapsed with exhaustion.
According to ABC News, Lt. Greg Elwin of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office said:
“They were fighting for about two hours, wearing Renaissance-type armor and fighting with swords fashioned out of wood. She’s a 100-pound girl, and he’s a 300-pound adult.”
Stepmother did nothing to stop it
The victim’s stepmother, Julie Seay, allegedly watched the punishment and did nothing to prevent it. Fremon was released Monday on a $10,000 bond. Julie was released on a $5,000 bond.
Sherry Hill of the Department of Social and Health Services said the charges are being investigated by Child Protection Services. The victim and another child in the home were left in the custody of relatives while their parents were in jail.
