Florida Rep. Brad Drake is sick and tired of convicted killers “getting off easy,” reports the Associated Press. He has introduced Florida HB 325, a bill that would bring firing squads or the electric chair back to death row. Convicts would be allowed to choose between either of these replacements for the drug cocktail.

Firing squads to end the debate

Florida Republican lawmaker Brad Drake claims his idea for reintroducing death by firing squad came to him after he had a talk at a Waffle House with a constituent, notes the Los Angeles Times. The topic of conversation was Manuel Valle, a convicted killer who was executed this September despite the protestations of his lawyer, who argued that the new drug cocktail in use would cause pain that amounted to cruel and unusual punishment.

Now serving: The ‘lead cocktail’

Via a news release, Drake exclaimed that HB 325 would end the humane treatment debate by allowing a firing squad to serve a “lead cocktail.”

“We still have Old Sparky,” said Drake, referring to the electric chair. “And if that doesn’t suit the criminal, we will provide them a .45 caliber lead cocktail instead.”

Sensitivity toward those who take human life must stop, in Drake’s opinion.

“Every time there is a warranted execution that is about to take place, some man or woman is standing on a corner holding a sign, yelling and screaming for humane treatment,” he exclaimed. “I have no desire to humanely respect those that are inhumane.”

Florida HB 325 up for vote in 2012

The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature will consider the merits of Brad Drake’s bill in 2012, writes the AP. It is currently available online, and it does not, as Drake expressly notes, “increase the punishment or modify the penalty of death for capital murder.” What it does, suggests to the Florida Congressman, is put the criminal justice system back on course.

“I think if you ask a hundred people, not even talking to criminals, how would you like to die, if you were drowned, if you were shot, and if you say you were put to sleep, 90 percent of the people would say I want to be put to sleep,” Drake wrote. “Let’s put our pants back on the right way.”
