A family became lost in a massive Massachusetts corn maze Monday night. The frightened parents called 911 as dark fell and the family was soon rescued by police.
It may sound corny
The reality of being lost in an elaborate maze would probably frighten anybody. The seven-acre corn maze on Connors farm in Danvers, Mass., is a winding labyrinth that, when seen from the air, depicts a pumpkin-headed mounted rider, right out of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
Trapped in maze an hour after closing
The family, whose name remains undisclosed, were still trapped in the maze an hour after the maze closed. Darkness was falling when they decided to call for help, according to WCVB in Boston.
A call to 911
“I don’t see anybody. I’m really scared. It’s really dark and we got a 3-week-old baby with us,” the mother told the 911 dispatcher.
“Just relax, calm down. You husband’s with you right?,” the dispatcher asked.
“Yes, but my baby … ”
The woman was told that police were on their way.
Police arrive with dogs
The police soon arrived and, using dogs, found the family about 10 minutes after entering the maze. As it turns out, they were only about 25 feet from the exit.
Just listen for traffic, owners say
Bob Connors, one of the owners of the farm and the maze, told reporters from the Boston Herald:
“We had a few people who got a bit lost last year but they found their way out. There is no wire or fence around the maze, so if they really want or need to get out all they have to do is listen for the sound of traffic they can always make their way through the corn rows to the road.”
