A bank robbery was thwarted Tuesday in Westminster, Colo. The robbery was allegedly committed by two women who police later learned were mother and daughter.

Claimed to have a bomb

The robbery took place at about 4:40 p.m. at a TCF bank in Westminster. Tina Guerrero, 31, reportedly entered the bank claiming to have a bomb inside a duffel bag she carried. She loaded the bag with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled to a waiting tan Blazer SUV outside. The get-away-driver was later identified as 53-year-old Norma Sisneros, according to the Denver Post.

Spotted by plainclothes officer

A plainclothes officer working on an unrelated case in the area spotted Guerrero by chance as she was leaving the bank. That officer called in a description of the vehicle.

“We had a description of the vehicle, and a short time later an Adams County deputy spotted the vehicle in the area of 36th and Broadway,” says Westminster police spokesperson Stephanie Topkoff.

The Blazer was followed by police to the Pine Tree Village Apartments in Adams County. Guerrero ran inside, but the deputies immediately arrested Sisneros, who did not try to resist.

Found in the laundry room

Guerrero was found inside the apartment building laundry room with the stolen money. Guerrero was also arrested and police learned that the two women were related.

“They are mother and daughter,” Topkoff said told Denver’s KDVR TV News.

One of the residents of the building, John Paez, told reporters:

“(Guerrero has) been having money problems. I can’t believe she’d do a bank robbery. … She’s got no place to go. She’s got a very bad infection on her legs and stuff because of spider bites.”

Paez said that he and his wife had allowed Guerrero to stay with them after she got out of the hospital last week. He said that he had heard her talking about a bank robbery but never took the conversation seriously.

Possible armed robbery charges

According to KDVR News, the pair could face armed robbery charges. Even if there was no real bomb, threatening to have one is reason enough for the charges, police say.

ABC 7 News of Denver reports that Guerrero has records of previous arrests for felony drug possession, assault, parole violations and shoplifting. Sisneros, however, had only one previous arrest for a warrant on a traffic violation.
