Retired Orlando, Fla., police officer Tim Davis Sr., 47, simply lost his temper, says WESH 2 TV. Unfortunately, his moment of unchecked anger cost the life of his son Tim Davis Jr., 21. During a child custody argument about his granddaughter, Davis Sr. pulled a gun and shot his son dead.

‘I did not mean to kill him,’ said Davis Sr.

According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 613 Americans died due to accidental gun violence in 2009. While that’s only a small fraction of the approximately 100,000 who are injured or killed by firearms annually, Tim Davis Sr.’s accident at a home on King’s Eagle Lane in the Pines of Wekiva subdivision of Apopka, Fla., was anything but small. Apopka Police Department Capt. Jerome Miller said Davis faces a first-degree murder charge in the slaying of Tim Davis Jr., a former standout football player at Apopka High School and the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

“I did not mean to kill him. I have nothing to hide,” Davis told investigators. “I was not trying to kill him. I just lost it.”

The arrest warrant for Tim Davis Sr. notes that during an argument about Davis Jr.’s 3-year-old daughter, his son pushed him and punched him in the mouth. Police say Davis Sr. told them that once he began to bleed from the mouth, he immediately went to his car, retrieved a gun and shot Davis Jr. two times. Davis Sr.’s 9-year-old daughter corroborated this unfolding of events when questioned by authorities.

Argument involved custody of son’s child

Apopka police records indicate that the fatal argument between Tim Davis Sr. and his son involved custody of his son’s child. Davis Sr. retired from the Orlando police department in 2006 after 18 years of service, then went on to own three child day care centers. A representative of the Florida Department of Children and Families said that the murder charge will likely dissolve ownership.

“The arrest is a disqualifying offense under Florida statute,” wrote the DCF representative in a statement. “Our legal team is aware of the arrest and reviewing information to determine the best course of action.”

Neighbors stunned by shooting

Tim Davis Sr. was a respected member of his community who always came to visit his son, according to neighbors.

“It hit me out of left field,” said one woman. “I would’ve never expected this to happen.”

Another neighbor named Sean Chambers reflects the overall mood of the surrounding community after the horrendous turn of events.

“I’m still trying to feel what happened,” Chambers said. “I’m kind of hurting.”
