A pizza parlor in a British Columbia resort town was recently terrorized by a black bear. The hungry ursine invader wandered into the shop near closing time and wolfed down several pizzas.
Marauding omnivore craved cheeseburger pizza
A black bear, according to the Daily Mail, recently carried out a daring raid on a pizza parlor in the town of Whistler Village, British Columbia. The town is internationally famed for the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort, which hosted portions of the 2010 Winter Olympics, according to Wikipedia.
The bear entered Fat Tony’s, a pizza restaurant, around 10 p.m., sauntering in the back door while employees were starting to close up. The bear went up to the counter where the pies were located, and began eating away. Apparently, his table manners were impeccable as he took individual slices rather than just devouring pies whole.
Customers began leaving the restaurant, and stayed outside until the bear ate his fill and was shooed away by animal control. He ate vegetarian, cheeseburger and, according to the Vancouver Sun, beef and bleu cheese pizzas. The young bear is now a viral video star.
Bears behaving badly
According to The Missoulian, a black bear was found trying to access the Missoula International Airport on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The bear was chased down the tarmac, ran up a tree and was tranquilized and transported to a safer area. The airport director quipped that “apparently he was trying to fly south for the winter” when asked for comment.
Earlier this summer, a black bear was found stealing a Toyota Prius in California. According to CBS New York, the bear opened the car door and forced the gear lever into neutral. The car rolled down the driveway of a vacation home near Lake Tahoe of the McCarthy family of Homewood, Calif. The bear demolished the car’s interior completely and the McCarthy’s ultimately had to write the car off as totaled.
According to WTAE, an ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, Pa., a family in Natropa Heights, Pa., were surprised to find a black bear cub eating from their bird feeder on their front porch on Sept. 30. He even posed for pictures before being removed by authorities.
A Missoula, Mont., woman recently deadpanned that she would have to compliment her landlords on the landscaping as “the bears like it” after a black bear sow was removed from her yard, according to the Rapid City Journal.
Encroaching upon habitat
The old saw that humans are encroaching on animal habitats is not an old wives’ tale. Most articles about bear encounters, though some are humorous, mention that bears have fewer places to look for food. That is the price of golf courses and housing developments.
Not all encounters are cheeky. According to the Daily Mail, a couple in Oliver Township, Pa., were mauled by a black bear when the bear chased the couple’s dog into their living room and attacked them on the morning of Oct. 3.
