For keeping her hair looking fly, one woman has been crowned by the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s largest afro. Meanwhile, another woman’s ‘fro kept her from flying. The TSA detained the Dallas-bound woman to be sure she wasn’t carrying a bomb in her hair.

The world’s largest ‘fro

Aevin Dugas’s afro measured 4 feet 4 inches around when it was examined for the book of world records. According to Guinness, that is the largest in the world. Dugas says the real downside to the poofy hairdo is that it’s an obstacle to driving, at least when it has just been blown and picked out. “If it’s as big as it’s gotten, I can’t see. I have no peripheral (vision). I can’t react quickly to anything.”

Prompted by a Facebook friend, Dugas entered a contest for the world’s largest afro, which led to her being contacted by the Guinness people. Since her record was accepted, Dugas’s hair has grown to an amazing 5-foot circumference.

‘A Friday-Saturday thing’

Dugas says she only poofs her hair out to its maximum extension when she is going out. “It’s more of a Friday-Saturday thing,” she said. It is a process that requires two days to dry.

Meanwhile, in other afro news…

Detained by TSA

Isis Brantley, who was flying on American Airlines from Atlanta to Dallas earlier this week, was stopped by TSA agents, who were certain she was hiding something in her healthy afro.

‘The lady with the hair’

“I just heard these voices saying, ‘Hey you, hey you, ma’am, stop. Stop — the lady with the hair, you,” Brantley said. A female agent, according to Brantley, started “digging in her scalp” looking for weapons.

Brantley, a hairstylist who hasn’t cut her hair in 41 years, was incensed. “They have never done that to me before,” she said to reporters.

The TSA issued a statement:

“Additional screening may be required for clothing, head-wear or hair where prohibited items could be hidden. This passenger left the checkpoint prior to the completion of the screening process. She was offered but refused private screening.”

‘Fro fliers

It’s not the first time the TSA has detained a passenger for having a ‘fro too big. In July, Laura Adiele was detained by TSA agents at Seattle’s Sea-Tac airport wishing to inspect her ample hair. She accused the agency of racism.
