An English-speaking boy appeared in Berlin earlier this month saying that he had lived the last five years in the woods south of the city. The authorities are baffled as they investigate the boy’s identity.

Lived in woods with father

The boy appears to be about 17 years old. On Sept. 5, he presented himself at City Hall in the German capital. In perfect English he told authorities that he had lived in tents and earthen huts in the woods with his father for the last five years.

Nationality of boy undetermined

“He speaks fluent English and very broken German,” Michael Maass of the Berlin Police. He told the Guardian that police do not know if his accent is American, British or some other English-speaking dialect. “He doesn’t show any signs of abuse, and he is in good shape physically and psychologically,” Maass said.

Buried father in a shallow grave

The boy calls himself Ray but has no idea what his last name is. He said his father, named Ryan, died two weeks earlier. He buried him in a shallow grave, which he covered with rocks.  He then used a compass to travel north, per his father’s instructions, until he came to the city.

Believed to have amnesia

According to the boy, he and his father took to the woods five years earlier when his mother, Dorene, died. He says he can’t remember where they lived before they took to the wilderness. Police believe the boy to have amnesia.

‘We don’t have any other clues’

The boy has been taken in by a youth emergency center until authorities can figure out who he is and where he belongs. “We have nothing more to go on than what he told us. We don’t have any other clues as to his identity,” Maass said.

Appeal to Interpol

The Berlin Police have appealed to Interpol to find out if there are any unsolved cases of missing teens. They have not yet released a picture of the boy.

“We have never seen anything like it,” Maass said. “We have no evidence to contradict what he has told our colleagues at the youth services, although we are still investigating and very much want to find out who he is.”
