Deposed Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi is on the run from international and rebel forces, and as so often happens when one makes a hasty retreat, Gadhafi has left some things behind. According to The Daily Beast, a secret “Gadhafi love den” tucked into the recesses of Tripoli University has been uncovered. Among the romantic furnishings is equipment university officials believe may have been used for illegal abortions.

More than a speaking engagement

Each year, Moammar Gadhafi reportedly went to Fateh University in Libya (renamed Tripoli University once rebel fighters gained control) to deliver lectures. Little did the school know that Gadhafi had a secret love chamber on campus.

“What we found is shocking,” says university dean Faisal Krekshi, 55. “This was Gadhafi’s place. Only he and his people had access to it.”

Speculation on uses for secret room

Behind locked doors, school officials found the following, according to The Daily Beast:

“A cozy double bed, flowery carpets, and small lamps that casts off a warm orange glow. In an adjoining bathroom there’s a Jacuzzi with water jets.”

While no Tripoli University faculty members claim to have seen Moammar Gadhafi’s love den, it is known that he brought his mistresses there. Speculation exists that he also raped female students there. Krekshi, an OB/GYN doctor, found the presence of a gynecologist’s table to be both odd and disturbing.

“There’s a gyne bed—what the hell is it doing in here?” he asked. “I think it’s here for illegal abortions.”

In addition to Gadhafi’s love den, there is an office that was used by Libya intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi and a prison.

Make hate, not love

During the reign of Moammar Gadhafi, the university campus was closely monitored by Revolutionary Committees that were charged with determining the loyalty of faculty and staff to the “Brother-Leader,” Gadhafi. Spying and informing were openly encouraged, and dissenters were hanged on campus.

Once the current rebellion against Gaddafi began in February 2011, campus monitoring efforts intensified. According to Krekshi, documents were found in Gaddafi’s love den naming which staff members needed to be executed for their lack of faith.

Condi, can you meet me

Rumors say mistresses and female students may have done time in the Libyan love dungeon, but according to TNT Magazine, one woman who got Gadhafi’s attention got away. In a 2007 interview with Al-Jazeera, Gadhafi admitted to having a crush on former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice:

“I support my darling black African woman,” Gadhafi said. “I admire and am very proud of the way she leans back and gives orders to the Arab leaders … Leezza, Leezza, Leezza. … I love her very much. I admire her and I’m proud of her because she’s a black woman of African origin.”

Reports indicate that Gaddafi and Rice met multiple times to attempt to repair relations between their nations. While Rice has not commented on Gadhafi’s revelation, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland did:

“Bizarre and creepy are good adjectives to describe much of Gadhafi’s behavior. So (it) doesn’t surprise me. It’s deeply bizarre and deeply creepy.”
