A woman was arrested Thursday after she claimed to be a vampire and bit chunks out of the face and arms of a homeless man. She was found by police half-naked and covered in blood. She said she had no memory of the attack.

‘I am a vampire; I am going to eat you’

The attack happened just after midnight Thursday morning outside an abandoned Hooters restaurant in St. Petersburg, Fla.  A 69-year-old homeless man, Milton Ellis, was sleeping when 22-year old Josephine Smith straddled him and whispered into his ear “I am a vampire; I am going to eat you,” according to information on the arrest affidavit.

‘Free from her trance’

Smith then proceeded to bite a piece of skin off of from Ellis’s arm. Then she went for his face and lips. Horrified, Ellis somehow managed to break free and escape. Later, when Ellis described the experience he said getting away felt like he was breaking “free from her trance.” He fled to a nearby gas station and called 911. His lip wounds were severe enough to require stitches.

Met hours before

Ellis knew the woman. They met a few hours earlier at a shopping market behind the abandoned Hooters. He had invited Smith to stay with him under an overhang at the abandoned restaurant. Allegedly, Smith was waiting for a relative from Pensacola to come get her.

“He was staying near an overhang near the vacant Hooters restaurant, so he thought it might be a good place for her to stay,” said Mike Puetz of the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Smith could offer no explanation

Smith later told authorities that she had no recollection of the attack. She could provide no explanation as to why she was found undressed and smeared with blood. She has been charged with felony aggravated battery on an elderly person. She is currently detained at the Pinellas County Jail on $50,000 bail.
