When administered safely by a professional, fat transfer, Botox and similar treatments can help soften the visible lines of time. As Janet Hardt of Homewood, Ill., discovered, the process of age suppression can be taken to fatal extremes. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Hardt died after injecting hot beef fat into her face.

Facial surgery enthusiast battled time and lost

Janet Hardt, 63, reportedly injected hot beef fat into her face Thursday while in her suburban south Chicago home in the 1000 block of W. 186th Street. That day at 6:25 p.m. she was pronounced dead by doctors at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest. An autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of Hardt’s death is scheduled for later today, Sept. 10, said the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Repeat injector

Sources indicate that Hardt had injected hot beef fat into her face around her mouth and chin, a procedure she had personally undertaken several times before. This time, her face was singed. Hardt had complained of a burning sensation, which prompted her to seek medical attention.

Hospital spokeswoman Rachael Jones told local media that reports from the medical examiner’s office have yet to be verified. Homewood police await the results of the autopsy and will release further details after the autopsy report is filed.

‘A very rare incident’

Fatal home cosmetic facial surgeries like Janet Hardt’s are “very rare,” American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery President Jeffrey Kenkel told the Daily Mail. Cases of people injecting everything from baby oil to silicone and other non-FDA approved products are frighteningly common, he went on to say. In each case, home surgery exposes the individual to potential infection from bacteria. Moreover, allergic reactions and injury to nerves and blood vessels can occur.

The fact that there’s a market for such dangerous home surgery doesn’t help.

“Patients can obtain products over the Internet, and there are videos showing you how to inject yourself,” Kenkel said. “They don’t know how to inject the products under the right conditions.”
