A Florida couple tried to take a friend back to jail Sunday when they discovered her using drugs less than a week after bailing her out of custody. The mission backfired on the couple, who found themselves slapped with false imprisonment charges.

Couple arrested for using force

Daytona Beach, Fla., sheriff’s spokesman Gary Davidson told reporters Monday that Jose Vega, 34, and his wife Zaran Vega, 26, were arrested Sunday when they they used physical force in attempting to compel their friend, Crystal Richelle, 27, to return to jail.

Friend bailed out the week before

The Vegas had bailed Richelle out of the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach less than a week before the Sunday incident. Richelle had spent 10 days behind bars for failing to appear in court on charges of providing false information to a pawnbroker. The couple let their friend stay in their home to dry out from her alleged prescription drug addiction.

Bond ‘revoked’

But when Richelle started seeing her fiancee again and allegedly resumed abusing prescription painkillers, the couple decided to “revoke” their bond.

Late Sunday afternoon Vega drove his minivan to the home of Richelle’s fiance, where she was visiting. Vega burst in and yelled at her, according to witnesses. He then reportedly grabbed her by the arm and hair and dragged her toward his minivan. When Richelle’s fiance tried to intervene, Vega knocked him out with a punch to the face.

Vega then picked up his wife and the trio drove to a bail bonds office where they told sheriff’s deputies that they wanted to return her to jail. Vega’s wife admitted to being aware of the plan and backed her husband up.

Not licensed bondsmen

Because the Vegas are not licensed bondsmen, they were arrested on charges of false imprisonment. Jose Vega was also charged with battery and booked on $2,000 bail. Zaran Vega was booked on a $1,500 bond.

Richelle did not offer to pay their bonds.
