An unemployed man in northern Illinois found a duffel bag full of $20 bills in his backyard Monday evening. Police later found a second bag, for a total of $150,000. So far, nobody has a clue who left it there.

Green and peppers

Wayne Sabaj, 49, an unemployed carpenter in unincorporated McHenry County, went out to his garden to get some fresh broccoli to go with his beef dinner Monday. There, among the peppers, he spotted a duffel bag which he found to be stuffed with $20 bills.

Dilemma for father and son

Sabaj went inside and showed the bag and its contents to his father, who also resides in the house. “I told him, ‘we have enough problems, now we got another problem.  Look what I found in the garden. What are we going to do with all this money?’”

Authorities notified

While most people, especially those who are out of work, would not find such a discovery to be a problem, Sabaj was worried that it may have come from a bank robbery. He was afraid of being charged with the crime it he spent any of it. He decided to call the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and turn the money in.

A second bag found

When sheriff’s deputies arrived, Sabaj took them to his garden and showed them where he had found the money. The deputies quickly located a second bag. Together, the amount of cash in the bags equaled $150,000.

“I went and spent my last $10 on cigarettes yesterday,” Sabaj said. “But I turned in $150,000.”

Authorities are baffled

McHenry County Undersheriff Andrew Zinke told reporters that the Sheriff’s Department is baffled. The bags did not appear to have been there long, and no robberies have been reported in the area. The money is now undergoing fingerprinting and other tests in hopes of finding some kind of lead.

Good luck with that

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Department left a card with a phone number in place of the bags, with a note on the back saying “Please call.”
