A Chicago man, previously arrested 98 times, was sentenced to prison Monday. He was caught with drugs in his possession while pushing his 3-year-old daughter in a stroller.

In possession of heroin

Albert Luis Alvarez, 37, was arrested on Aug. 10 in the suburban town of Riverside, Ill., after local police received a report of a man asking for handouts to help him take care of his child. When police approached Alvarez, he allegedly threw several bags of heroin on the ground. He tried to flee and, after a brief struggle, was apprehended. Officers on the scene found even more drugs in his pockets. The child was turned over to a family member.

According to police, Alvarez was going door-to-door claiming to be injured, using his daughter as a ruse to extort money from residents.

A staggering rap sheet

After taking Alvarez to the police station, he was identified through his fingerprints. It was discovered that he had a staggering rap sheet of 98 arrests and 23 convictions. His convictions were for robbery, larceny, burglary, smuggling, assault and possession of drugs. His previous arrests revealed five different social security numbers, nine different names and 10 dates of birth.

Tom Weitzel, Chief of the Riverside Police Department, told reporters:

“Alvarez has consistently and repeatedly disobeyed orders of the court and blatantly disregarded the law by intentionally engaging in criminal behavior. … He’s proven to be prone to violence and will stop at almost nothing to evade police.”

Sentenced to 18 months in prison

Monday Alvarez pleaded guilty to the charge of obstruction of justice for attempting to get rid of the heroin. For that charge, he has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. The amount of drugs in Alvarez’s possession was not of a sufficient amount to warrant a longer sentence.
