Winning the Automotive XPrize, sponsored by Progressive, has long been the ultimate goal of car designers. A four passenger automobile that gets 100 miles per gallon is set to receive the $5 million prize. Vehicle trials in Michigan are presently taking place, and there are two different cars that are in the running for the prize.

The workings of the Automotive XPrize

The Automotive XPrize is supported by the XPrize foundation. Sponsored by Progressive auto insurance, the Automotive XPrize was announced in 2008. EPA mileage estimates are the basis of the competition. The main prize is given to a four passenger car, while two half-prizes are given to one and two passenger vehicles. The cars entered in the Automotive XPrize competition need only be concept cars, not production-ready.

The Automotive XPrize Competition

In Michigan, April 26 was the start of the XPrize competition. The three classes of cars have been put through their paces. Some tests are designed to be very comparable to city driving. Driving situations comparable to highway driving are also a part of the competition. The target is 110 miles per gallon, though to receive the XPrize a team only has to get 100 mpg. The vehicles have to perform within safety and performance guidelines also.

Ingenuity on show at XPrize races

Last-minute ingenuity is required to win the Automotive XPrize. One requirement built into the Automotive XPrize is that passenger cabins stay cooler than 90 degrees. Some teams are using homemade air conditioners to make certain they meet that requirement. Hypermiling driving techniques are also on display throughout the competition.

The real possibility of winning the XPrize

There are two cars still in the running for the Automotive XPrize. Both will be put through a wide variety of safety tests. If either one of the vehicles pass the tests, they’ll be given the award.
