Former U.S. Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell walked out on two interviews Wednesday. She was offended by the line of questioning on both a Utah radio program and on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.”
‘I am not a witch’
The Delaware Tea Party Republican was interviewed for the “Piers Morgan Tonight” show to promote her new book “Trouble Maker.” O’Donnell became defensive early in the interview when Morgan asked her about her infamous “I am not a witch” ad.
In her failed 2010 campaign, O’Donnell — a born-again Christian — used the “I am not a witch” ad to counter an earlier statement, made on “Politically Incorrect” with Bill Maher, that when she was younger she had “dabbled” in witchcraft.
Views on sex
O’Donnell became even more defensive when Morgan asked her if she still believes masturbation is wrong, saying he was being “a little bit rude.”
On a 1996 MTV program, O’Donnell expressed her conservative views on sex, which included abstinence from masturbation. “The Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery. So you can’t masturbate without lust.”
Asked about gay marriage
But the kicker came when Morgan asked O’Donnell her views on gay marriage. One of the former candidate’s staff members blocked the camera so that she could not be seen as she left the studio.
Morgan tweeted later “Ms. O’Donnell wasn’t happy about me quizzing her re views on witchcraft and sex. But really flipped at gay marriage Qs.” He also wrote that she ripped of her microphone and stormed out of the studio.
O’Donnell later told NBC reporter Savannah Guthrie that Morgan exaggerated the walkout and that one of his stage hands actually removed the microphone.
When questioned why gay marriage was a taboo subject, since it is discussed in her book, O’Donnell told Guthrie the walkout was “not about gay marriage,” saying that she was offended by Morgan’s “creepy line of questioning” and that the interview had run late and she was due at a Republican women’s event.
Morgan said the walkout was a first for him in 25 years of conducting interviews.
O’Donnell’s interview will air on “Piers Morgan Tonight” on CNN Friday evening. O’Donnell declined Morgan’s invitation to a second interview.
Utah radio interview
O’Donnell was also interviewed by telephone on the “Radio from Hell” show in Salt Lake City, Utah, Wednesday morning. When Bill Allred, one of the show’s hosts, questioned the significance of her primary victory in Delaware against opponent Mike Castle, O’Donnell said “It was about five or six percent. It was a very, very respectable margin.” When Allred countered that it was hardly a trouncing, O’Donnell hung up.
