Former Playboy Playmate Shannon McLaughlin was arrested at Orlando International Airport Monday night. McLaughlin was attempting to board a flight carrying a concealed handgun.

Playmate and grad student

McLaughlin, 26, was the Playboy Playmate in the July 2010 issue of the men’s magazine. She is also a grad student studying for her master’s degree at the University of Central Florida.

According to WKMG TV in Orlando, Fla., McLaughlin was was arrested while trying to board a plane for Los Angles in order to attend a photo shoot.

A handgun hidden in duffel bag

The arrest affidavit reports that McLaughlin placed her duffel bag into an X-ray machine as she was passing through security. A Transportation Security Administration worker “saw what appeared to be a handgun on the screen.” The worker found a Ruger SAA .45 long Colt handgun in her bag. The gun was loaded with six hollow point bullets.

McLaughlin says gun belonged to boyfriend

When questioned, McLaughlin said the gun belonged to her boyfriend and that she had no idea it was in her bag. She was quick to point out that she does possess a license to carry a concealed weapon. She did not, however, have the permit in her possession.

Jailed Monday night

McLaughlin was arrested and held overnight at an Orange County jail on misdemeanor charges. She later posted a bond of $250 and was released.

A stepping stone

A Florida native, McLaughlin grew up in Jupiter and went to Palm Beach Gardens High School. When chosen to be the July Playmate last year, she told reporters at WPTV “I think it’s going to be a huge platform to work with Playboy and all the working opportunities that are going to be available to me. And then, hopefully, it will lead to different movie roles or hosting positions and stuff like that.”
